Good literature search - less animal suffering

Replacing animal experiments is the motto of the Animalfree Research foundation. This goal may be achieved by not only alternative methods, as is shown in the project "3Rupdate", which we supported. The project began its regular operation in 2017 and it is a great success story. How did it happen?

Every person who wants to carry out an animal experiment in Switzerland must submit an application (Form A). For the Animalfree Research, the focus has always been on paragraph 61. The applicant has to indicate whether there are known alternatives to animal experiments, for example in the literature. This question is often answered incompletely or very unsatisfactorily. One of the reasons for this is the difficulty to carry out meaningful literature search on alternative methods. The Animalfree Research has repeatedly drawn attention to this fact, e.g. at the Forum 2013.

The issue was therefore already high on our agenda, when the collaboration with Dr. Sylvie Vullioud began. She had a simple but ingenious idea of how to improve the ability of prospective researchers to do literature search: an online test requiring exactly these skills, such as targeted search strategies, that should be the prerequisite for attendance of more advanced courses in laboratory animal science. The Animalfree Research decided to support the project. The project was finalized at the end of June 2017 and the course is now in regular operation.
