Is it empathy?

Altruism and prosocial behaviours in laboratory rodents:

Inhalt

Empathy research is currently a big topic in neuroscience, with a growing number of studies focused on how emotions drive people’s thoughts and actions. There is increasing evidence that various non-human species, including rats, are also sensitive to the emotions of others and react to distress in other animals by attempts to ameliorate their situation or rescue them.

Altruism and prosocial behaviours do not necessarily require empathy as a prerequisite, though. One of the main question is, therefore, whether the existing observations in an artificial (and often simplified) laboratory environment justify the conclusion that empathy is actually at the core of active helping behaviours.

In addition, Animalfree Research would like to raise and discuss the following questions:

  • Do all species display empathic behaviour?
  • How do we define and test for empathy in animals?
  • What are the implications for judging severity degrees?
  • What are the implications for research?
