Animal models in neurologic and affective disorders

Understanding and curing disease: is it time for a new way forward?

Inhalt

For the research of human psychological and neurological diseases, in vivo experimentation was and is conducted to great extent. More often than not these animal models mimic the symptoms, but do not mirror the primary causes and disease progression in humans. In addition, this research can be highly distressful. An increasing number of critical scientists is therefore questioning the value of such animal models for elucidating the pathogenesis of and developing successful therapeutic approaches for these afflictions. In its upcoming Forum 2017, Animalfree Research will discuss the following issues with presenters and audience:

  • Have animal models contributed to a better understanding of these diseases?
  • What has been the outcome with regards to the development of efficient therapies?
  • How viable is the harm-benefit analysis under these circumstances? What is the potential of alternative methods?
  • Would moving away from animal experimentation towards non-animal methods be feasible?
  • What would a paradigm shift mean to research and patients?
