Generic Drugs
We are frequently being asked if generic drugs (generics) are being tested in animals. Generics are copies containing the identical active ingredient as the original product. After termination of the patent, smaller companies adopt the formulation and manufacture these products. We have asked Swissmedic (the Swiss agency for the authorisation and supervision of therapeutic products) if it really is true, that generics are not being tested in animals. Here is their answer:
You have inquired whether new animal experiments have to be performed for the approval of generics. We can respond to this as follows:
“No- no new animal experiments have to be done for generics. The data for the safety and quality assessment, generated by the companies and by Swissmedic, are based on bibliographic data”.
Consequently, generics are a reasonably viable alternative. This way, at least you are not directly supporting animal experiments. But we must not forget that the ingredients of generics have been tested in vivo for the original formulation.
We replace animal experiments
Animalfree Research wants to protect animal welfare and animal dignity by replacing and substantially reducing animal experiments. The former foundation "FFVFF" has applied itself to this for more than 30 years- now with a changed name but unchanged enthusiasm.
